EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES HIGH-EFFICIENCY CENTRIFUGAL OIL SEPARATORS

ST. LOUIS, August 10, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today introduced its new, full line of high-efficiency centrifugal oil separators. Designed by Emerson’s Flow Controls division, the high-efficiency centrifugal oil separator is ideal for use in multiple-compressor systems such as supermarket refrigeration racks. It is also ideal for applications that experience problematic oil returns, like ultra-low- temperature scientific or cryogenic systems.

Oil levels within the compressor are critical, especially in the operation of low-temperature refrigeration systems. Without an oil separator, oil in the discharge gas from the compressor remains in the evaporator and can lead to inefficient operation because of poor heat transfer. This also leads to low oil levels in the compressor, which can in turn shorten the life of the compressor. In either situation, the supermarket operator must spend more money on either higher energy bills due to system inefficiencies or higher maintenance bills for their compressors.

Emerson’s line of high-efficiency centrifugal oil separators provides positive oil feedback to multiple-compressor racks by removing oil from the stream of refrigerant to the condenser and evaporator coils. The centrifugal oil separator removes oil from discharge gas exiting the compressor and facilitates quick oil return to the compressor. With less oil circulating through the system, the overall operating efficiency of the system increases.

According to Al Maier, vice president of application engineering, Emerson’s oil separators offer many benefits over other models. “The high-efficiency centrifugal oil separator removes more oil from the gas stream, so that there is even less of a chance for oil to collect in the evaporator,” he said. “In addition to removing more oil, the Emerson Climate Technologies product is readily available for both new systems and for service replacements.”

The centrifugal oil separators were field-tested by an independent testing laboratory in order to ensure that the design was adequate for the marketplace. Comparison tests showed that the Emerson Climate Technologies oil separator models were significantly more efficient at removing oil from the compressor discharge gas.

“The more oil you can remove, the better it is for the system,” Maier continued. “In field tests, competitors’ models left two to four times as much oil in circulation than the Emerson Climate Technologies centrifugal oil separator.”

In addition to advantages in oil removal, lead times and efficiency, the full line of centrifugal oil separators features the following benefits:

The separators are easy for contractors to service. Float elements can be cleaned or replaced for optimum operation, and less brazing is required to perform maintenance. This leads to a reduced potential for leaks and less chance of introducing contaminants to the system.

Replacement kits for separators are available to contractors. Most centrifugal oil separator models can be serviced instead of being replaced. The float replacement kit is also compatible for use with AC&R oil separators. Because the service parts kit is compatible with competitors’ models it significantly reduces the number of repair parts needed.

Separators are available with two leg heights. The position of the oil separator can be adjusted based on the design of the system and the customer’s needs. The models are easy to service because the flange is located at the desired height, making it easier for technicians to service the system.

The full line of centrifugal oil separators is currently available for use in new units. The models are also supported by Emerson Climate Technologies’ extensive aftermarket support network, making the parts available for replacement and retrofit as well. The high-efficiency centrifugal oil separators complement the full line of Emerson’s oil-management products, which includes screen-type oil separators, coalescing-style oil separators, mechanical oil-level controls, oil reservoirs, oil filters and the OMB electronic oil-level control.
