Developments of Toxicological and Physiological Studies on Air Formaldehyde

This paper is a review on formaldehyde toxicological studies. Part I is an outlined review about the toxicological studies on air formaldehyde. The authors summarize the toxicological studies into four periods: (1) the period without systemic toxicological study (1908-1975), (2) the high tide nonage (1975-1983), (3) the period with conventional toxicological methods (1983-2000) and (4) the period with molecular toxicological methods (2004~). Part II is for describing the foci of our team on molecular mechanisms on the physiological and toxicological effects of formaldehyde, which includes: (1) regulation of gene expression, (2) methylation and demethylation of DNA or proteins (epigenesis), (3) apoptosis, (4) oxidative damage of biological macromolecules, (5) airway neurogenic inflammation, (6) acquired atopy/asthma, (7) pain model caused by formaldehyde, (8) hormesis effect,&nb
